some may know that I have a Dodge Grand caravan, (96), I am thinking about getting a mag mount and placing it dead center on the roof. Problem is I put it in the garage. I have seen a fold over connector that I have thought about using and putting a antenna of some sort on top of it.
I have a mag mount cobra that can handle 300 watts and talk up and down the cb band and usb and lsb. I also have a trunk mount Wilson 1000.
I am thinking of using the Cobra for now until more funds become available. I would l love to put a 102" wip on the passenger rear quarter panel but the boss might frown on that (well once its there, its there, Hummmm)
Any ideas?

Personally, i have nothing but trouble with mag mounts - the cable gets damaged by the door, they scratch the paint and generally they are less efficient than a properly installed grounded mount type of antenna.
Look around, there are several mounts designed to work with a lift type rear hatch and one of these might suit you better. |

You can go with the Wilson mag mount on the roof. It would work just fine. Personally I like to drill holes and I would use a beehive roof mount.
The 102 inch whip would be the best ideal but on the roof of the van. If you put it on the rear qaurter panel its not going to work very well at all. You need to get as much of the antenna as possible above the groundplane, preferably all of the antenna.

I am probally going to us the cobra just for now to get up and running. Hopefully I can get a wilson of some type.
I do have a K40 but it needs a new coax and I dont thank it can handle more thank 500 watts

I was always told never to run more than 200 watts thru a K40. |

Ok More antenna ?'s When I can I want eathier a willson 1000 mag mount or a willson 500 mag mount. The 500 has a 1000 watt rating but the copper catalog said nothing about ssb on the 500. The 1000 can handle 3000 watts but I did not see any ssb info in the catalog eathier. The 500 would handle my needs and is a shorter  so it may fit a future use beter (Different car or when I inheret the Rendezvous) the 1000 is bigger and can handle more watts (I have a Texas Star 400w)but I dont think I will over rev the 500, but the 1000 would give me room to grow if I want to. As for the 5000, YEA BUDDY but over kill for me.
Any Input on the 500 vs the 1000
Gumball, My brother LOVES the K40 and he says he fixed the coax so he can keep it. Thanks for the Info about the watts, I will pass it on to him.

I would go with the 1000 because it is longer. Any antenna will handle much more SSB power than AM power. AM power has a carrier so the transmitter is constantly applying 3 sidebands of power to the antennas coil causing greater heat build up. SSB power is just a single modulated signal with no constant carrier at all, just PEP. The quick off and on charging of the coil creates less heat build up.

Thanks, I am planning to get a 1000.
I was looking on the wilson web sight the other day and seen that the 1000 and 5000 come apart like the K40. The sight said that each 1000 and 5000 come with a weather cap to! The mag mounts and even the trunk mouts too (I think) and also you can get just the trunk mount or mag mount and cox with out the coil and antenna. How long has this been available? The trunk mount 1000 I have is all one piece.
With the wilson comming apart like the K40, It makes it a NO brainer what I will get!
