Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the 2510 and the 2600 other than one has mic gain and the other has variable rf power?

1) is one better than the other?
2) does one put out more PEP than the other?
3) anything else?

If you had the choice to pick up a mint 2510 or 2600 for the same price (both chipswitched), which would you choose and why?

Thanks!

I have owned both. The real difference is the conversion. The 2600 is harder to do. I have never had to convert mine, they came that way. To be honest, I like the 2600 better. It had a better sounding audio, but they both worked great. But I made my 3 UK contacts on the 2600, so it kinda has a sweet spot in my heart. And if you have a 2600 with the chipswitch in it, you have a few more features. Either one would be a great radio to own though.

In my opinion the HR2600 was the best of it's breed. It has built in repeater offset capability as well as a ctcss encoder board. The RIT can be turned off if you like, and there is no roger beep. The 2510 has a roger beep.

They both use an MRF477 as the final transistor, so they have the same output. In stock form they were tuned for 25 watts on SSB and about a 10 watt key on AM. If you want the final to last a long time, I'd let it at stock power levels.

If you actually want to use the radio on 10 meters the HR2600 is the clear winner. Regardless of your choice of radio, the Chipswitch makes it better. It adds repeater capability to the HR2510 and lots of customizable features to both of them. They're the best 10 meter radios ever made in stock form, and the Chipswitch takes them way over the top as the best 10 meter radio ever in my opinion.

Which would I choose? BOTH! I own several of each, and my stockpile keeps growing each time I find a good deal. Most of the radios I own have been used, bought for less than $150 usually from fellow amateurs.

The only thing I'd watch out for is a radio that's been modified a great deal. There are hundreds of modifications for these radios, and most of them are worthless in my opinion. Many of them are obsoleted by the Chipswitch. I like to add a Channel Guard and that's all.

Thanks sodapop. What kind of power does it put out? Is it dual final? I'm asking because I am wondering which mobile linear would be the best match...a straight 4-pill like a TS500 or a 1 driving 4 like a TS 667. If it will key 10 and swing to 40 PEP then I would use a TS500, but if it won't do over 25 PEP, then I'd turn it down and use a TS 667.

Hollowpoint: Thanks very much for the info. When I posted the reply to sodapop, your reply wasn't here yet. Anyhow, you say that stock it will do 25 PEP on SSB and key 10 on AM, but what about the PEP an AM? Will it do 40? I only ask because of my linear question above. I'm leaving until Wednesday night, so I won't be back to reply until then. Thanks.

I can't remember what the power level was on either one. I am pretty sure the 2600 had a little more power on SSB, and like I said, it had some wonderful audio.

The MRF477 is a 40 watt device, so the radio is capable of 40 watts on peaks. I don't personally know that it will do 40 watts, because none of my radios have been peaked out. The MRF477 is expensive so I don't want to replace it if I can help it. Keeping the radio at stock power levels will hopefully make the final last a long time. My first 2510 is over 10 years old now, and still working well at stock levels.
