If you are talking about communications purposes, about 30-35 watts pep.
If you are talking about making a wattmeter swing as far as possible, it "can take" quite a bit more than that, but the resulting output is very, very nasty, and no contribution to longer distance talking. I know people who have advocated dumping up to 100 watts into one, and they will usually survive that up to a point, but it is pointless and stupid. |

I guess what i'm wantting to know is would a Magnum S680 be to much for the DX500 if i keep the dead key down to around 2 or 3 watts and let the magnum give it a forward swing of around 70 or 80 watts??

less then 40 watts swing is what the dx500 will want. back the mic gain down til it gets to that level-AM or SSB. you should be able to back the S6 mic gain down more then 50% & hardly anyone will notice any difference. |

it will take whatever the pep of the amps specs say.if it says 50 watts pep then thats all you can swing into it without burning something up. i would'nt use any more than a 2 watt DK. |

can't always go by the specs of the amp. the texas star chart is pretty much useless in that regard. it gives 'numbers', but not what you need to know. you need to go by the specs of the transistors it uses. the 2sc2879 will handle 10 watts PEP input, or more, though it can make its rated output of 120 watts PEP with as little as 7 watts PEP input at 12.5-13.6 volts. divide by 4 for carrier input, then multiply by quantity of transistors(in this case, 4). so in response to Kpoe 28's question, a dx500 can handle from 7-10 watts dead key input, and 28-40 watts PEP input, & provide 120 watts carrier & 480 watts PEP output. turn the rf power output & the mic gain on the radio down to zero, then increas the power til the amp dead keys 120-with no more then 10 watts input. turn the mic gain up, while talking, til PEP touches 480, or wherever it stops increasing. so yes, by using the external controls on the S6-80, it can be used to run a dx500. |
