Over the years I've had several original models of Cobra 148 GTL radios. I now own two not of Uniden manufacture. One has been proven to have been made by RCI (Ranger). I run the one made by Ranger Base and another one mobile that has no markings inside the radio what so ever, on the printed circuit side they look much the same. On the other side of the board they are different in color, the one by Ranger is a tan color and the one in the mobile has a dark brown board.
At this point I've figured that it depends on which country they were made in. The ones by Uniden have the word Uniden on all the boards.
I'm now wondering, other than those by Uniden. How many different manufacturing companies made the first model 148-GTL radios, and how they are identified?

I think there is like 3 or 4 different manufactures, someone else probably knows for sure.

Come on guys, some of you must know a little something on the manufacturing companies that made the later first model 148s after Cobra broke away from Uniden, sometime around the early to mid 90s.

Thanks Patrick,
But I'm wanting the company names of the manufacturing companies. Like one of my 148s was made by RCI (Ranger). I know the countries where they were made.
Counting Uniden and Ranger I believe there was at least 2 or 3 other companies making them.
This is just something I would like to know.

My 148-GTL I run in the mobile was made in Taiwan Republic Of China, this just might be the other company you were thinking of.
The boards in the Ranger and Taiwan made models look very much the same, just that they are of different colors on the componate side of the boards.

So far I've found out this much. Those by Uniden were Philippines, Ranger was Malaysia, (my mobile in Taiwan, which I haven't yet found out that company name).
That accounts for three of the companies. I would still like to know the company names of the others.
I believe there might still be two more countries of manufacture. I've been doing a lot of searching on the internet to get this far.

I know that the company MAXON has built radios for Cobra. How long or if they still do I don't know. Reviews that I have found on the Maxon built 148 GTL was positive.
