People are telling me I sound tinny on this mic as compared to my D104 that sits next to it.
Anyone know any mods or techniques to get this mic sounding more natural.
Don't get me wrong they say the mic sounds good, but they say it just does not sound quite like me. These fellas have met me and the D104 so far is the winner of the contest so far.
Kid Vicious posted something about putting holes in the mic element in a triangle pattern near the edges. Anyone know about this mod and what does?

Thanks,
WR

I guess we don't have any Microphone guru's or Audio buff's out there. I guess I will have to refresh my memory on audio circuits, and see what I can do. It may as simple as adding a cap or something to block higher freq's. Google knows though, and somewhere in Googles vast memory is a answer.

Wildrat,
I am not sure of the mic but if it contains any packing/Spacers near the mic element try changing the position of the spacers and the mic element. I did this once with a commercial VHF two-way and it seemed to imrove the audio.

Don't get me wrong the mic sounds great, everyone says it's crystal clear. In the past couple of days dxr's have even commented on the mic. People that have talked to me in person know I have a deep voice, they just say the mic out just has a treblely sound to it with my voice. Does that make sense?

I have found that as well in talking to other D104 users. It sounds almost like a drum set symbol ringing while they talk. You have to listen close but it contributes to the "tinny" reports.
I've found by turning the modulation down further bit by bit they eventually find the sweet spot for natural voice...that combined with relative close talking within 4" of the mic.
Ends up coming through loud but not booming (like your in a garbage pail) and natural without that tinny overmod like someone is scratching a pie plate behind you!
I STILL say leave your woven Rat sock on it next time you talk and get a report! No close talking on that though...the whiskers might tickle your lip and make you sneeze..

The knitted Rat is actually on my D104, I have a dress sock on the Silver Salute. The sock is acting as camouflage so the wife does not see it for a couple of months, after that I'll be safe. Then when she says where did that mic come from I can say "Oh I've had that thing" Then when she sees the Red Devil in the Jeep I can say the same thing.
I may make another Rat cover for the Silver Salute. I don't know how to knit but II can sew a little,, good enough to make a rat anyway.
