hi to all the forum members i have a question. what 10m radio you think is best?? (that includes most power,echo,frequency counter,am/fm/ssb operation.) price don't matter. thank you for your come back.

Are you talking about a radio to be used on 10 meters?(Ham, 28-29.7 MHZ) Or, as is likely the case, are you talking about using this radio on 11 meters(CB, 26-27.9 MHZ)?
My answer to your question depends on what yoyu are going to use the radio for. |

IMO, the best current production export is the 29xx series from RCI if you are into sideband. The 2970DX will do 160 to 180 clean watts. If you are interested in SSB quality and performance, it can't be beat in the export market. It is the only current production export that has a VFO so that you can change your frequency to a non-channelized freq that doesn't end in "5", which is a much-needed feature for the sideband enthusiast. The benefit of this is you can change to, for example, 27.400, then use your clarifier in RX only. If you do this with a radio that doesn't have a VFO, you need to unlock the clarifier to do it, and the result is that your TX will track with your RX. It's nice to have the option. If you DO want your TX/RX to track together, then you can use your VFO as a clarifier. If you are not interested in built-in amps, then the 2950DX is the same as the 2970 minus the 2 pill amp.
For AM, the 29xx series has plenty of modulation. However, if you are interested in echo or other noise toys and want to sound massively loud a la Connex or Galaxy, this is not the radio for you.
If you are not interested in SSB, the Connex 4600 Turbo is a great radio, but overpriced for what you get IMO. It also has a small traditional meter and no frequency counter.
If the LCD display and advanced functions of the 2970DX is not your bag of tricks, and you are just a casual sidebander but spend most of your time on AM, and want killer AM TX, echo, etc, and want a built in amp, then I would reccommend the Galaxy 95T2. Tons of features, big meter, real frequency counter (not just a display) good SSB (once it warms up), RX/TX switch for the clarifier, Starlight faceplate, etc. This radio is a BIG talker. One big downfall of this radio is that it has no external echo adjustment...it is done with pots on the internal echo board. However, it can be modded to have external echo controls.

I guess I should have asked that too, but I guessed that he meant 10 meter exports converted to 11 meter because his question referred to echo...a feature not found on HAM rigs. |

The reason I asked is because this post was moved here to the HAM section.
I wholeheartedly agree with the RCI 29xx DX radios for a recommendation. Get one tuned correctly, and you will work the world, given good conditions.
The Magnum 257 is one of my favorites as well--and it DOES allow access to even numbered frequencies like 27.430---you just have to set the step size to 1 KHz and move up or down to wherever you want to go. They have great audio in all modes, and a fairly decent RX (maybe not as good as the RCI, hard to say. |

Just my lowly opinion but if you can get your hands on one i heartily recommend a Magnum 357DX. It does everything you want with the exception of the echo. I have one and i wish i could get 2 more....lol. 150w barefoot helps a bit too.

yes i'am talking about a radio to be converted and used on 11m (channel 19 27.185 am/freebanding) how much clean rms power can i get out of the galaxy 95t? is it expensive to put the external knobs for the echo? i always liked the 2970 but has no echo. thank u for your coments. dxuall1 |

Caledonia, you are correct about the Magnum 257 going to even freq's, as do the Omega and Delta Force, but I didn't mention them for two reasons:
1) not currently available (will be soon though)
2) only 5 digit frequency counters...that 6th digit is VERY important for SSB IMO
If the 257 ever came out with a 6 digit frequency counter, I would definately be interested in giving it a try. |

I have run both the htx-10 and mag-257 for years on 10 meters ssb/fm they work great .... |

The frequency readout on a 257 is not a counter, only a frequency display. The clarifier is tied to both RX/TX, so I see no need for a 6th didgit on the readout---I tune to ear, when the other station sounds perfect, I stop clarifying and carry on my QSO. I don't get hung up on whether we are on 27.570.0 or 27.570.1
As long as we are on the same freq, what difference does being off by 100HZ make? |

I use a 257 and it works fine for 10 meter phone.
The Magnum 257 does repeater splits for 10 meter repeater work.
It also has a pre set pl tone of 88.5.
Anyone know if this tone is adjustable? |

Not one of the 10 meter repeaters in my neck of the woods works with a pl of 88.5.
What version of the 257 do you have? yellow lights blue lights, first or second release?

The 257 with the blue or yellow leds manufactured after Mid-October, 2004 are EXACTLY the same except for the color of the lights/leds.
There are only two versions at this time those 257's made before Mid-October, 2004 and those made after Mid-October, 2004. |

I do have the newer blue display 257, and I have a 357DX from 2002 which also has the repeater split/88.5 pl tone.
I think these are nice little radios for 10 meter operation, and with the new licensing changes in amateur radio, I hope RF Limited can get these radios back in production soon. |
