how can you tell if an amp has auto ssb?its a 2 pill mobile that has no markings other than what the switches do.i've seen a palomar and a galaxy that look exactly like it but mine has no markings anywhere inside or out.can't i look at the circuit board to tell if it has auto ssb?what do i look for? |

auto SSB ? Never heard of it SSB in amps is done by using a cap to delay the relay.
NOW there is a old trick called FAST ATTACK/ SLOW DECAY used in old SSB radios which would work as a AUTO am/ssb selector as far as relay speed HOWEVER the RELEASE time would always be the same too slow for most am. |

i saw the auto ssb on a boomer 500 that made me wonder about mine.it said auto ssb on the front of it. |

If you are in SSB mode talking the amp should stay keyed. After you finish talking it will delay or stay keyed for a second. If you are in SSB mode and the amps' relay is clicking off and on as you talk then it is not SSB capable. See in AM mode you have a constant carrier to keep the amp keyed even if you don't talk. In SSB mode you have no carrier only swing so in between words there is no power to keeo the amp going. The delay circiut in a SSB amp keeps the relay from wearing out and keeps your audio from cutting up.

thanks hotwire,thats what i needed to know.the amp does stay keyed for a sec or two after after talking so i guess i can use it on ssb.i just did'nt want to damage the amp.maybe ill send in a few pics for the amp of the week to find out what it is.thanks again.
