You can't go wrong with a Wilson 1000. It's performance is amazing.

What vehicle, what mount, what location on the vehicle? All above answers are great, but we need some more facts Sgt_rat.

Wilson 1000 will do a fine job. Preditor 10K will do better. Wilson easier to use if you have to remove it very often

As I have said many times before - there is no such thing as a best antenna. An antenna that works on one car/location for one user may not work as well in your location or on your vehicle.

Having said that yes some antennas (see the ones named)do seem to work consistently well but this does not mean they are the best and you may find one that has not been mentioned works better for you than any of the ones mentioned. Personally I have always found good performance with a quarter wave whip mounted as high on the vehicle as possible (yes even roof mounted once) but realize that it does not suit everyone.

Whatever antenna you choose understand that it is a compromise and do not be afraid to try others to see if they may suit you or work better for your application.

The vehicle is an 04 Dodge Ram. I've been kinda leaning towards a Predator 10k w/27" post and mounting it on the front side center of a steel, over the rail tool box. The 27" will put the coil about 8" over the top of the cab. At this location the antenna is centered on the vehicle.

Rat,
You will still do better if you can get that 27 inch section above the cab too.

Sgt rat, Most of us know that the best antenna is the 102 inch stainless steel whip. To make it the most efficient antenna we need to add 6 inches to it for a total length of 108 inches. The 4 inch spring and the 2 inch ball is very important. Of course the entire antenna needs to be above groundplane as much as possible.
It was not practical to put the 8 foot whip on my car roof so I chose the rear fender. Worked great but was extremely directional.
So I compromised and went with a Predator 10 K. A foot shorter and very well made. I installed it on the trunk lid. I ALWAYS permanant mount my antennas. Not as effective as the whip but being that I can tune the Predator and center it on the groundplane better it makes up for what I lose. I will never use any other antenna when it comes to getting the most out of my DX hobby.
I always say bigger is better. If you can get the 8 foot whip to work for you correctly on top the truck then do that. If you have hieght issues then use the biggest tuneable antenna possible and center it the best you can. I recommend the Predator 10K single coil 17 to 27 inch shaft. Get as much of the antenna above the truck cab as possible. Try to get the coil at least a few inches above the cab.

Thanks everybody for the feedback. The Predator 10 k seems to be the antenna that will be the most practical one for my application. I just ordered one so once I have it installed I'll let everyone know how it talks. Thanks again
Rat
