What are power mic's usefull for?

I had a buddy that HAD to have a power mic on every CB (AM only) radio he used. He told me that it helped him transmit farther because it gave his radios more power. I remember him constantly over modulating.

Another buddy said that power mic's only help when using USB & LSB.

So what are their real purpose?
