i recently bought a ic-706 for $450.00... And have been looking for vhf/uhf/hf antennas for the house i was looking at the challenger dx from gap, or the hvu8 by comet, or the mfj1798. any idea's wich would be the best or maybe other antennas to look at?
also i believe this radio has 2 so239's in back one for hf other for vhf/uhf if it does will i need a duplexer to run the radio off one of the fore mentioned ant's above? thx (p.s. i think thats All fer know??? lol) |

The cheapest antenna that will give you several bands is a G5RV-JR but you need 55 foot to run it .....
You are correct one input is 160 - 6 meters the other is 2 and 440 ....
I have beams on 144 and 50 mhz and verticals for 50, 144 and 440 mhz comet makes a duplexer that works well for 144/440 and 50 mhz splits one port gives you 144/440 and the other 160-6 meters.
IF you can only run a vertical hustler makes a 4vbt for less that 150 bucks gives you 40-10 and 40 20 17 12 and 10 with a tuner ..... |

You're a lot better off running a dual band antenna for VHF and UHF since the loss in diplexers is unacceptable. |

Check out the Workman UVS-300. High gain, 17 feet tall Dual band 2meter/70cm dual bander, about 80 bucks. I've had mine up 3 years, flawless so far. |

k ill look into those i cant run beams even tho id like to but like i said lookin for a all in 1 antenna cuz of limited space

I have tried several verticals and found them to be at best marginal. The hustler 4vbt was one of the better ones but your only going to use one of 4 bands.
The only one that allows you to set it for the band you want to work is the hygain av-18vs and you do that by changing a tap on a loading coil.... a real pain .....
IF you are forced to use one get a antenna tuner it will allow you to go on bands that the antenna will not go otherwise .... |

The first one I used on my 706 was the Jetstream JTB-4, it's a great antenna, made my first contact to Bruce on it.
