Rascal853,

Remove D67 (May be a SMT) depending on when your radio was produced.

It will give you a low non adjustable sounding talkback.

Personally after doing it I do not feel the mod is worth the trouble.

And if you are not used to working with SMT's BE VERY CAREFUL and DO NOT use too much heat.

SMT = Surface Mount Technology

Since you identified the diode, remove it and see if that suits your tastes. Otherwise, put it back and look for another alternative.

This is a bit of a hit in the dark, but look hard at D78.

I can't be sure, but if you are comfortable with lifting that off to try it, see what happens.

Like I said, no guarantees.

I don't have the schematics for your specific radio. I know, I looked.

Good luck with it though.

Maby you get talk back, but at a level you can't
hear so well. put your EAR close too the speaker.
If you hear it now ,You need a Ampiflied speaker.
My 148 is like this,You had talk back all the
time.threw the EXT jack.. johhn
I.E.a speaker with a power cord +,- ...

Does the 2980 have PA? Jump a 100ohm resistor from the PA jack to EXT speaker jack on the foil side of the board like Johhn has his 148 setup. You can put a toggle inline for on/off. If no PA on the radio you might just be better off to let it be or find a tech who knows the radio.
KEEP IT REAL!
