hi all,
most likely when i move, the amateur antenna that i will be putting up will be an inverted vee.
i will be using it with a tuner, and i would like to operate 80-10 if possible.
i have about 30 ft. of height and about 60 feet of width to work with.
can anyone make a suggesion as to a manufacturer / model # or a design i could make?
i would really like to build it,but i dont mind buying one if it works well.

My favorite choice would be the Alpha Delta. However, the shortened G5RV would be an O.K. choice. |

I agree with Bruce on the G5RV-Jr. One caveat to that antenna....if you can only get 30 feet up you are short selling the value of this antenna. An additional 10 feet makes some difference in performance. I had mine at 30 feet and it was ok. I added a 10 foot section of mast to my push up pole and I started hearing more stations than before. I did a little investigating and found that 40 feet(+) is apparently the height to make that antenna work better.
An additional thing to consider is this...if you do get the 40 foot mark, you can short the twin lead with a matching unit, add radials and then you can actually make that antenna work on 80 meters. It becomes a vertical with a capacitance hat(the legs of the antenna). Admittedly, not the best antenna but it will work.
About the most bang for the buck in my opinion. Take that for what it is, my opinion!!!

thanks for the responses guys!
i have owned a G5RV in the past. the short version.
i must say that at the time i didnt really have the space to mount it properly so i never got the correct perspective on its performance.
what i have been reading has led me to believe that a single band dipole cut for, say, 40m, used with a tuner, would outperform the G5RV for 40-10m use.
am i mistaken? (happens alot!LOL)
also, i found out about the 40' thing, and that pretty much cinches it for me.
i definitely wont be able to put up more than a 10' mast on the roof peak.
maybe 15', but i doubt it.
house cant be more than about 17' high by my estimation.
trying to be very inconspicuous, but i wont bother with things like ISOTRONS, and the like.
if i cant put up at least a wire antenna, i will just listen to my scanner!LOL
if i were to use the G5RV, some of the ladder line would lay across the roof, meaning that it would be at the pitch of the roof, not vertical.
not sure what impact this would have on performance.
i will check out alpha delta's site,
simon, im very interested in the antenna you mentioned.
maybe i should just buy the 1:1 balun center insulator from MFJ and build my own.
who knows...

If you are using a tuner and balanced feedline like 400 ohm twinlead I have to agree with Tech237. The most reccomended length, if you have room and a way to mount is 134ft, 67 on each leg. This is a long one, There are shorter lengths which will resonate on most of the bands and still tune up on the others. This is what I will do when I get a tuner that will tune balanced line. In the meantime I am using a resonant fan dipole with wires for 40, 20 and 17 so I can use coax with no tuner. |
