I currently have a galaxy 959 to a KL500 to a straight 8(2879) pill. I set the KL to a 50w dk swinging to 200 making 500dk 1100pep.
I'm wondering what kind of numbers would I get from a Magnum 257 going straight into the 8 pill? Would it be worth it to wait for the "new" 257? Is there another way to get the 8 pill working using the radio only? I only use the 8 pill when DX rolls in. I don't want to max out the radio and loose audio.

i ewould think the 257 [50watt]version wouuld
drive the straight8 good.
the current 257 if still advailable would match up nicely to the kl500 after turning down the rf power a little bit on the knob

you can drive an 8 pill with 'low' input, you'll just see less output. depending on what amp it is, vary the radio's output til you see about 400 watts dead key from the amp, & see how it sounds from there. the 50 watt 257 is 50 watts of swing, or about 1/3 the PEP input a dx1600 would handle, maybe 1/4 what a custom would handle, so, that's about what swing you'd see out of an 8 pill, 250-400 watts. roughly.
