Soon I will be moving to my new house and will finally be able to have my base set up. My question is I plan to install a 35 or 40 foot tower with my Alpha V5000 but in the next year I want to put up a beam on a 60 ft tower. How far apart should I put the towers to keep interference between them to a minimum? I figure the tip of the Maco will be approximately as tall as the top of the 60 footer so the beam will be above the omni. I will probably put the omni furthest from the radio room to save money by running a single feedline the furthest instead of two for the beam.

As far as possible! Minimum of 40 feet though. |

What kind of interference are you concerned about? If you're worried about antenna interaction and the beam is horizontal only, then distance isn't an issue because of the isolation between vertical and horizontal polarization.

HP - even with cross polarization at close distances there still can be problems. in that situation minimum distance I'd use would be 1/4 wave spacing BUT more is definitely better.
Bullseye follow Tech833 advise and you will not have any problems.

Thanks Guys. I'm thinking I'll put the Maco at one end of the house and the beam at the other. At 55 ft. that should give plenty of clearance between them.

Hmmmm. If cross polarization is a problem, then how do cross polarized beams work? That's about as close as you can get.
I've read articles about neighbors sharing a cross polarized beam - one horizontal and one vertical - and using both at the same time without problems as long as the frequencies used were separated by a couple of channels.

I was more concerned with the resonant frequency interference(one antenna affecting TX and RX of the other)by their nature of design. Also I will need to run about 100 ft. of coax to reach the omni. Can I use LMR-240 if I get a good match and keep the power below 300 watts PEP? WHY Because LMR-400 or 9913 is twice as expensive and I'm kinda poor

let's see...$100+ for a v5000, considerably more for a beam, how many hundreds of dollars for a tower, hundreds more for your magnum radios, + how ever much more you have invested.
antenna AND its FEEDLINE are more important then radio & 'less then 300 watts'. 100 feet of coax?
assume 45 cents a foot for 240 & 65 cents a foot for 400. all those thousands of dollars spent on equipment, & saving $25 on coax??????
save the money for 9913 or 400 & do it RIGHT the first time!  |

i agree with pat get the good coax.and antenna
then everything else will fall in place.i thought you could mount a stick directly above
a flatsided beam on same mast or am i missing
something here???????/

Never thought about it that way Patzerozero. When you put it like that I guess I can wait a little while longer to save up enough to use LMR 400. THANKS FOR PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I'll just wait and buy a whole spool so I have enough to use for the beam when I get it.

Hey Patzero, I will bring this up again. I know somewhere on here from way back when, I said the following: Only now add to this equation, "coax".
Folks buy an expensive radio and want to spend no more than $10 to $15 for an antenna, then complain because they cant hear anyone or get out. I tell them it is like this: you do not buy a Big Screen TV and use it with rabbit ears. I guess the same can be said for coax. I tell you what though: I guarantee you, his set up will do wonders! Bullseye, go for the best on that coax. You will never look back.

If you look you can even find other sources. This is the stuff I'm going to use when ever I get some instructions on the Interceptor 10K, so I can put it together.
