I am looking for a powerful dx-inspired mobile antenna. I was looking at the Monkey Made, and that made me stumble across the Mr. Coily, and while researching it, I discovered the Predator. So, I defiantly either want the Mr. Coily or Predator, but don't know which. They are very simular design. The Coily is 1 peice, and the Predator is multiple pieces. I think the Coily is easier to tune.

I don't know which to go for. Anyone ever compared the 2? I've sent E-Mails asking each about the other to never recieve a response.

the response i got from xxx was that his 'is what it is' & 'he will not dispute his customers findings'. to me, that sounded EXACTLY like what i have found over the years-ABSOLUTELY no noticeable difference WHATSOEVER in XMIT or RCV. between MOST of the large open-air DX-type mobile antennas. i have seen a difference, from barely noticeable to very noticeable between the 'standards'-wilsons, k40's, 'glas sticks, tuneable 'glas sticks, astatic antennas, & probably 20 or more large open-air coil DX-types. the predator is multiple pieces because if you damage it, it can be repaired. or, you can change pieces. as for tuning, i think my predator was just as easy to tune as any antenna i ever tried. i got 1.1:1 swr on my mag mount in 15 minutes, by trimming over 15" from the stinger. i later checked with an analyzer to find my resonant frequency was down nearly 2 mHz. i cut a couple more inches off the stinger, got resonant at 27.1, swr 1.1:1 from 26.8-27.5. bandwidth is about the only difference between the 'big' antennas. the THICKER the are, the wider the bandwidth. while they show resonance where you want, & swr are good, i have HEARD that the wider the bandwidth ACTUALLY shows LOWER field strength readings then those wiht NARROWER bandwidth.
if i ever hit a branch with a monkey made, i'd peel the roof off my truck. the coily or predator would break 1st. the predator can be repaired. i don't need to handle 25kw like the monkey. i have used predator for years.

I'm not into mobile antennas like Pat is, but, i have played around alittle with both those antennas. Not much difference at all between Coily and Predator. The only difference i seen was in the way they were built.
They were borrowed, so, i didn't own them.
If i had to choose one, it would probably be the Predator. Both are nice, depends what you want...

Never touched a coily but I would also like to add that the P10K is also ALUMINUM...feather light! Makes a BIG difference if your going with a 3 pad Mag mount. I lug mounted mine through the roof of my pickup and other than wind load I'm GLAD this thing is only few ounces compared to pounds!

Somewhere I have photos of my first car (Austin 1800) with a Hustler roof mounted with an 11m tip on it. Forgot about it one day and went into an underground carpark - 36 lights I took out before I made it to a spot where I could fold it over

if ya can swing it , why not a 1/4 wave whip ? no coil loss , good bandwidth ... what i did for 10 meters was to use the bottom {4ft.} of a Hustler HF antenna with no coil on it but a 4ft stainless whip . It covered all of 11 meters and up to 28.800mhz on 10 meters with a swr of not over 1.7 ....
