MOST 2 meter radios are good AVOID older radios with out tone but there are a bunch in the $100-200 range!

I read online about the Wilson 2M antenna. Got rave reviews, except for it's height. Go to "eham.net" to see the reviews.

Most 2 meter antennas are 5/8 wave end fed and all of them work the same.
The hustler is a 7 foot tall 5/8 wave stacked over a 1/4 wave and is the largest antenna made for your car and these are several 1/4 wave ones only 19 inches tall for thoes who want to not have to take a antenna off the car in the garage.

The only antenna I would be carefull of is MFJ.

Maxrad for 19.95 you will have to find or order an NMO mount for it (got mine localy, you could also use an NMO mag mount) great antenna, use it daily

just ordered the firestik 2 meter 5/8 antenna myself. gotta prune it the old fashioned way but it has the screw thread to match my ball mount. if I add a spring (which I will need to on top of my van) they say ya gotta chop 4 inches off. now I gotta invest in a nice set of vhf meters to adjust it properly. believe they said it shifts 300khz for every quarter inch ya prune.

still researching which base antenna I wanna get. got it narrowed down to 3. the MFJ-1516, Ringo 2, and the g7-144. need to figure out which one is the best built. since I'm disabled and will have friends helping me get it up, once its up its staying there.:-)

Really disapointed in the firestick. mounted it on my spring, then checked the swr BEFORE starting the prune job. as expected the SWR was off the scale at both ends of the band because of the added length of the spring. instead of chopping off a whole whopping 4 inches like it was mentioned on the web site I decided to go with 3 to start with. this brought me down to the edge of the scale at both ends of the band. started pruning 1/4 inch at a time. swr needle started coming down. never could get the low end of the band (144.00 below 2.5:1) even though i got the high end down (148.00mhz) to 1.5:1 before it started creaping back up. 4 mhz bandwith advertised? BULL!. got fed up, bent it double a couple times using the corner of my bumper, then threw it on the junk heap at work.

Of course on 2m you can always build an antenna. I have plenty of plans kicking around. Let me know what you want and I'll see if I have something along those lines and email it.
